Singapore Things To Do Today - Jermal

Jermal
(part of Film Screenings – Indonesian Arts Festival IV)

At least three different Indonesian films will be screened followed by a talkback session where award-winning and critically acclaimed Indonesian filmmakers will share their experiences and insights into the film industry.

About the movie: After his mother’s death, Jaya (12) is sent to his father, Johar, who works as a supervisor on a jermal (a fishing platform perched on log stilts in the middle of the sea). Johar is shocked, never knowing he had a son, and rejects the boy as his kin. Fully aware he can’t bring Jaya back to land due to a dark past, Johar is forced to accept the boy as a worker on the site.

Faced with constant rejection from his father and relentless bullying by the other boys who work on the jermal, Jaya decides to take fate into his own hands. He gives up hope of being accepted and learns the skills and attitude needed to survive on the jermal.

The result is a picturesque period piece full of energy, adventure, and breathtaking scenery. Forced to flee Paris as the Germans advance, a mismatched group of oddly acquainted personalities reassemble in Bordeaux.

Singapore Things To Do Today - Going Local

Going Local – a double and triple bill
buds Theatre Company is proud to present its latest show, Going Local, an evening of local entertainment with a community edge! Written by recent graduates of the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University, all three plays are a fresh look at three very different aspects of Singapore’s culture.

Staying Over – Jon is at his cousin’s house and the family’s maid, Siti, reveals that it is her 21st birthday the following week. To celebrate, the children decide to put on a play of her life.

Maggie and Milly and Molly and May – Four men, one cliff and one aim: jump and end it all now. One after another, the men arrive only to find someone else is already there. A bad tempered queue begins to form.

Rebellion – Axle just wants to do whatever he wants, wherever he wants, with whoever he wants. This doesn’t ever seem possible until the day his Fairy Godfather appears. Suddenly the world is his oyster. Or is it?

Time: 8.00 pm
