| The Big Durian Amir Muhammad, Malaysia, 2003, 75 mins, Rated NC-16 On the night of 18 October 1987, a soldier ran amok with an M16 rifle in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown district. His outburst triggered panic and rumours of racial riots in the Malaysian city. Did this act trigger the infamous Internal Security Act clampdown nine days later? Did the Malaysian public’s view of the police, media, judiciary, royalty and political process subsequently undergo a radical shift? The narrator of The Big Durian speaks to 23 Malaysians (some real, others fictional) about the circumstances surrounding reactions to the incident. About the director: Director Amir Muhammad is a writer and independent filmmaker based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His works have been featured at the Sundance and Berlin International Film Festivals. | City of Women/ La città delle donne Dir: Federico Fellini 1980 / Italy, France / 146 min / 35 mm / R21 Consumer Advice: Nudity and Sexual Scenes In Italian with English subtitles It took Fellini several years before he developed this fantasy into a film. The idea originated from an evening spent with director Ingmar Bergman and actress Liv Ullmann, where the two filmmakers discussed the possibility of doing a project together. The project went unfulfilled, but the seed that was sowed that evening sprouted ten years later in City of Women. Fellini described City of Women as almost entirely a dream. By interweaving his protagonist’s fantasies into a dreamlike structure, the film recalls Juliet of the Spirits, Fellini’s earlier attempt to examine the female psyche. The result is a tantalisingly erotic and tongue-in-cheek exploration of the modern woman and contemporary sexual relationships.
