Art / Exhibition

Breath-Taking by Li Huai

Breath-Taking is an installation of 200 portraits displayed in individual inflated plastic bags. Each portrait is abstractedly painted in acrylic and Chinese ink, and presented on media like plastic, paper and duct tape.

The audience is invited, through the exhibition, to question how our past impacts on our judgements, expectations and experiences. The process of reading, understanding and relating to “others” is also a pivotal theme of the exhibition.

Li Huai, who received her BA in fine arts at the Beijing Film Academy and her MFA in art at the California Institute of the Arts, is currently on the faculty in the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego.

This is Li Huai’s first exhibition at The Substation.

Time: 12 noon – 9.00 pm

Venue: The Substation Gallery

Film

A Brand New Life

A stunning debut, French-Korean Ounie Lecomte’s semi-autobiographical tale is a thoroughly unmanipulative drama that could easily have been overplayed, but isn’t. Produced by master Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-Dong, this is a powerful film about a nine year-old girl who is unceremonially abondoned by her father at a Catholic orphan.

Shocked, bitter and still holding onto the hopes of being reclaimed, she soon learns how to cope with her new life though a friend. Young Kim Sae-ron is heartbreakingly sympathetic as the lead actress.
